Therapeutic Massage Therapy

What is therapeutic massage?

Therapeutic massage is a massage therapy technique that focuses on the health and wellness of the entire musculoskeletal system, employing skillful manipulation of muscles and other tissues to promote healthy circulation, stimulate healing of injured or stressed tissues, and release physical and psychological stress. Unlike other types of massage that focus on one specific site or technique, therapeutic massage can include both light strokes to promote circulation in the upper layers of muscle and deep tissue techniques aimed at relieving stress and tension that can cause functional disability, weakness and pain.

What conditions does therapeutic massage treat?

Because it uses both light and deep tissue manipulation techniques, therapeutic massage can treat a wide array of issues, including:

  • acute and chronic (persistent) pain
  • tight or tired muscles and “trigger points”
  • stiffness and decreased range of motion in joints and muscles
  • chronic headaches, including tension headaches
  • repetitive stress injuries
  • sports- and work-related injuries
  • injuries from motor vehicle accidents and falls
  • restricted range of motion and reduced flexibility or strength
  • discomfort and stiffness following some types of surgery
  • chronic anxiety
  • high blood pressure
  • insomnia and other sleep-related disorders

Therapeutic massage can also be used following surgery to promote and facilitate faster healing.

What are the benefits of therapeutic massage?

Therapeutic massage is one of the most versatile types of massage, offering “something for everyone.” Therapeutic massage can be used alone or in conjunction with physical therapy or other treatments to enhance the effects of those treatments and promote overall health and wellness in every patient. In addition to helping heal tissue injuries and strains, therapeutic massage can have tremendous benefits in relieving chronic stress and its symptoms, helping patients become more relaxed and more focused and promoting concentration at work, at school and in other areas of life. By strengthening and toning muscles and other tissues and improving flexibility, therapeutic massage can also help prevent injuries at work and in sports, and it can also improve circulation, respiration and transmission of nerve signals to improve organ function throughout the body. And finally, therapeutic massage can help keep the entire body in balance, promoting a healthy immune system and helping the body ward off colds, flus and many other illnesses.
